Zaxel Systems Receives Grant From Department of Defense
Pittsburgh, PA (October 18, 2001) - Zaxel Systems, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded a substantial grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the US Army STRICOM division, both part of US Department of Defense.
The third such grant from the Department, the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase Two Plus Award will be used to further commercial development of a Remote Collaboration Virtual Environment Trainer (RCVET) to be used for training purposes at US Army STRICOM in Orlando. STRICOM is the Army's Simulation, Training and Instrumentation Command and is responsible for the research, development, test, and acquisition of training devices, systems and instrumentation used throughout the Army. STRICOM works closely with the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems division and the Air Force Agency for Modeling and Simulation, both in Orlando. Zaxel has already completed SBIR Phase One of the project called "Immersive Environments," which funded the creation of its three-dimensional video modeling technology.
The RCVET System commissioned by the Department of Defense will build upon Zaxel's Virtual Viewpoint Technology and will be used in military training applications, such as combat training, mission rehearsal and contingency operations. The award will allow Zaxel to make a number of specific enhancements to its existing technology, including lower hardware costs, collision detection and the development of an Application Programmer Interface (API), an interface that allows other programmers to use Zaxel's proprietary software. As a result of the funding for commercial development, Zaxel will able to sell RCVET-class systems to a broad spectrum of markets, from military to industrial.
"This award affirms Zaxel's dedication to both grant-funded R&D and to the creation of the world's most advanced 3D video technologies," said Nori Suzuki, CEO of Zaxel Systems. "The SBIR award also signals the company's continued shift from experimental technologies to commercialization and salable products."
The primary objective of SBIR grants is to increase the incentive and opportunity for small firms to continue cutting-edge, high risk, high quality scientific, engineering or science education research that represents a high level of potential economic return. SBIR grants are guided by DARPA, the central research and development organization for the Department of Defense, which has interests in advancing traditional military roles and missions.
